A Shetland Community Camp Site - Levenwick

This was the first camp site I stayed at on Shetland, in the South, I rode there directly after arriving on the ferry from Orkney. It rained a lot and was very windy, if you go cycling in Shetland be prepared to regularly pedal hard downhill into the wind! The wind also made me glad to have my Hilleberg Enan tent, which I double poled and added extra guidelines on this trip, they were both necessary!

Can you spot my little green tent in the centre?

By the way, it’s really amazing to see some people using totally unsuitable tents in such conditions. and only using one or no guidelines…

On Shetland there just aren’t enough campers to support commercial campsites, instead they have excellent community run sites instead.

Levenwick is completely run by a volunteer committee, with these facilities:

  • Toilets

  • Showers

  • Power sockets for charging devices

  • Common room and fully kitted kitchen, including washing machine (coin operated) and microwave.

There are beautiful views including Levenwick beach, which you can easily walk down to, a seal popped it’s head up while I was down there.

You book and pay online here (£13 per night for small tents):

Not only is the common room/kitchen a fantastic resource, it's also a wonderful place to meet and chat with other campers. While I was there I had some great conversations with a geologist, a market researcher, a retired teacher and a retired Proctor & Gamble scientist amongst others.
