Many of our members are cyclists…

If you have already seen our “About Us” page on this website you will know that we started in 1901, when six cyclists went camping. One of those founders was Thomas Hiram Holding, who was also a founder of what is now Cycling UK! Click on the Cycling UK logo opposite and you will be taken to our page on the Cycling UK website.

Lightweight camping is essential if you enjoy bike-packing or cycle touring and many of our members have taken their camping gear on cycle tours, some for very long distances across continents. Of course we enjoy meeting cyclists whatever bike they have and whatever distances they like to travel! There are almost always fellow cyclists at our meets and sometimes we will go out for informal rides around the local area.

At our meets there is almost always some conversation revolving around cycles, and it’s fun to exchange ideas and discuss ways to solve cycling problems.

The Camping and Caravanning Club also provides excellent and low cost camping for those of us on tour, using the “backpacker rate”. This is not widely promoted but if you turn up on a Club site they will almost always find you a camping spot, and the price can often be less than £10 a night!
