The Bicycling Times introduce Mr. T. H. Holding in December 1877

  • Transcribed Version of this "Portrait"

An article from the December 20, 1877 issue of The Bicycling Times and Touring Gazette provides a profile of T. H. Holding, the founder and captain of the Sunderland Bicycle Club. The piece, titled "Our Portrait Gallery," recognizes his contributions to promoting bicycling in the provinces.

Holding, born in December 1844, began bicycling in 1875. He co-founded the Banbury Bicycle Club, serving as its first captain. Upon moving to Sunderland, he established a bicycle club there, which grew to 40 members. The article mentions that Holding rode a "bone-shaker" in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, in 1869-70, and was the first rider in that town.

He was also an advocate for the sport, using his writing and public speaking skills to support bicycling. He proposed the idea of a Touring Club for bicyclists. The portrait of Holding featured in the paper was taken by Messrs. Stabler and Fries of Sunderland.
