Devizes and Salisbury “Double Meet”
We had a lovely long weekend meet, from Friday night until Tuesday morning, two nights at each site. We arrived by car, foot or tricycle but all in small tents!
The weather was warm, although we had some showers but, as usual, that didn’t stop us having a great time!
We had some new members who, of course, were welcomed, and joined in with our many good conversations over the four days.
As usual people did various activities, either by themselves or in small groups. One of the nice things about ALC meets is that they are very relaxed, people do things together or by themselves, it doesn’t matter. In my own case I did a parkrun, saw a small blues music event, visited Salisbury Museum and went on the Salisbury Cathedral tower tour. Oh, and some of us had a couple of nice evening meals at the pub!
Inside Salisbury Cathedral I saw the World’s oldest clock, made around 1386 and still working.
The cathedral is an incredible building and I really recommend the tower tour if you can handle climbing the 332 steps, taking you up 68 metres to the base of the spire. Along the way the guide will take you into the heart of the cathedral and explain lots of interesting facts and stories, going back to when the foundation stones were laid in 1220, over 800 years ago. It’s really remarkable that this huge structure was built on foundations that are only one metre deep, about the same as your house!
Every time I go to an ALC meet I have great conversations, learning a lot from them, but also I go to places and see things that I would otherwise miss…
